2) The Alternative Route: Subway Line 1 Sure, taking Subway Line 1 is easy since you don’t have to transfer or buy a special ticket—just tap your T-money card. However, you will likely be standing and rattling around for nearly an hour. Trust me, you might feel exhausted before your trip even begins.

What makes Suwon Hwaseong so special is that it’s not some isolated ruin hidden deep in the mountains. As you walk along the wall, look to one side, and you’ll see a serene, ancient landscape. Look to the other side, and you’ll see the bustling, modern streets of the city. You absolutely must have your camera ready, especially when you reach the Banghwasuryujeong Pavilion (방화수류정)—it’s arguably the most photogenic spot on the entire fortress trail.
2) Haenggung-dong (Haengridan-gil)
If you walk along the walls for about an hour, you’ll naturally find yourself descending into Haenggung-dong, affectionately known as ‘Haengridan-gil’. If you loved Bukchon Hanok Village or Ikseon-dong in Seoul, you will fall head over heels for this neighborhood.
It’s a maze of alleyways filled with old houses and traditional Hanoks that have been beautifully converted into trendy, aesthetic cafes. I highly recommend finding a rooftop cafe here to enjoy a warm morning coffee while looking out over the fortress walls you just walked.

With towering bookshelves reaching from the floor to the ceiling, it’s a massive piece of art in itself.
Beyond the library, the mall is packed with trendy Korean fashion brands, unique pop-up stores, and indoor activities. It’s the perfect place to spend the afternoon, especially if you need to escape the heat, the cold, or a sudden rain shower.
5. [7:00 PM] A Fantastic City Nightscape: Walking Around Gwanggyo Lake Park
1) A Romantic Lakeside Stroll
After you’ve had your fill of shopping, we’ll head to the final destination to wrap up the day romantically. From Starfield (near Hwaseo Station), a short bus or subway ride will bring you to Gwanggyo Lake Park.
Personally, I think a trip to Suwon is only complete if you see the night view here. There is a beautifully maintained walking trail circling the massive lakes. As the sun sets, the lights from the towering, ultra-modern high-rises reflect perfectly on the calm water, creating a dazzling, romantic nightscape. It has a very sophisticated and peaceful atmosphere, quite different from the bustling Han River parks in Seoul.

Take a stroll along the water, and then grab a seat at one of the lakeside pubs or cafes with outdoor terraces. Enjoying the cool night breeze while swiping through the photos you took today is the best way to end the trip.
6. Heading Back to Seoul: The End of a Perfect Day
1) The Quickest Way Back Once you finish up at Gwanggyo Lake Park, getting back to Seoul is a breeze. You can catch the Shinbundang Subway Line from either ‘Gwanggyo Jungang Station’ or ‘Gwanggyo Station’ nearby. This line will shoot you straight back to Gangnam Station in Seoul in just about 35 minutes without any transfers.
